British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT) will bring its youth music theatre auditions to Manchester next month, offering young performers aged 11 to 21 the chance to take part in its 2026 season of original new musicals.

The in-person auditions will take place on Sunday 8 February at Hope Mill Theatre, with two sessions available to book: 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Places must be booked in advance via the BYMT website.

Unlike traditional auditions, BYMT’s process is designed as a three-hour group workshop, led by professional theatre practitioners. Participants explore acting, singing and movement together in an ensemble setting, learning all material on the day. There is no need to prepare anything in advance, and no prior performance experience is required.

BYMT is looking for young people who love theatre and are keen to collaborate, with an emphasis on enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to work as part of a group.

Those successful at audition will be invited to join BYMT’s 2026 Young Company, taking part in a two-week residential course during the Easter or Summer holidays. Courses take place in Birmingham, Exeter, Manchester, Hull or London, depending on the project.

During the residency, participants work alongside professional writers, composers, directors and choreographers to help create and premiere a brand-new musical, which is then performed in a professional theatre at the end of the project. BYMT is unique in producing only original new work, giving young performers the opportunity to be part of the creation of future musicals from the ground up.

Emily Gray, BYMT’s Chief Executive and Creative Director, said the organisation’s auditions are designed to be inclusive and supportive. She explained that BYMT wants young people to feel welcome, valued and confident that their voices matter within the creative process.

Former Manchester auditionee and BYMT participant Ash Rodgers described the experience as relaxed and encouraging, highlighting the way the workshop format helps performers feel at ease and able to do their best work. Ash added that BYMT was a valuable experience for developing musical theatre skills and would recommend it to young performers considering auditioning.

BYMT has a strong track record in the North West. In summer 2025, its new musical Worn Out premiered at Lowry in Salford and was praised locally as an independent production full of heart and soul.

Auditions take place on Sunday 8 February at Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester.
