Review: Kinky Boots

This new production of Kinky Boots at the London Coliseum delivers exactly what the show promises, an uplifting, high-energy celebration of individuality, packed with strong performances, soulful music and a confident sense of scale.

At the centre of it is Johannes Radebe as Lola, and he is a revelation.

While his dance ability is well known, this performance is far more expansive. He is expressive in every sense, from the knowing glances to the precision of the choreography and the detail in his physical performance. Don’t get me started on the hairography, which is deserving of an award of it’s own! Vocally, this is not about overpowering the score, but about expression. Each line feels considered and nuanced, shaped by character rather than purely by vocal showmanship. The result is a performance that feels complete and fully realised.

He is also generous as a performer. Lola never overwhelms the stage unnecessarily, yet remains the focal point throughout. It is a striking take on an iconic role and one that makes a strong case for Radebe’s future on stage.

Hold Me In Your Heart is a clear highlight of the evening, landing with impact and earning a well-deserved standing ovation.

Matt Cardle delivers a solid and assured Charlie Price. His performance builds as the show progresses, and when he allows himself more freedom in the second half, it becomes particularly effective. Soul of a Man stands out as a defining moment, delivered with control and clarity.

Courtney Bowman brings warmth and energy to Lauren, offering an expressive and compassionate performance that adds lightness without losing sincerity.

The relationship between Charlie and Lola is well observed. Their chemistry feels natural, portraying an imperfect partnership as they navigate unfamiliar ground and make mistakes along the way. This dynamic adds authenticity to the production.

Visually, the show builds effectively on previous productions. The staging is a visual feast, with choreography by Leah Hill that is both precise and fluid. The design elements come together seamlessly, creating a production that feels polished and cohesive throughout.

At its core, Kinky Boots remains a celebration of friendship, identity and acceptance. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and a score by Cyndi Lauper, it continues to resonate through its combination of humour, emotion and music.

This production honours that foundation while elevating it visually and performatively. An outrageous, uplifting and empowering musical, packed with soul, and presented here as a confident and worthy new iteration.
