Quentin Tarantino to make West End debut with Sacha Baron Cohen in The Popinjay Cavalier

17 October 2026

Quentin Tarantino is heading to London's West End with his first stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, a new swashbuckling comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role.

Written and directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker, the production will begin previews at the Phoenix Theatre on 23 February 2027, ahead of its official opening on 18 March 2027.

The show is currently booking until 13 June 2027, with tickets starting at £25 and more than 16,000 seats priced below £50 across the run. Produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, The Popinjay Cavalier marks Tarantino's first venture into writing and directing for the stage.

Best known for creating characters including Borat, Ali G and Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen will lead the production in what promises to be an unusual pairing of two of cinema's most distinctive comic voices.

Reacting to the announcement, Baron Cohen joked: "Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first 'motherfxxxer'." He added that he was delighted to be making his West End debut alongside Tarantino, whose films include Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django Unchained and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

Tarantino kept his own response considerably shorter, saying: "I'm keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out."

Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is described as a comedy of deception and disguise, inspired by the grand swashbuckling adventures of classic Hollywood cinema. The production draws inspiration from writers including George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr., whose work helped define the genre on screen. Rather than adapting one of his existing films, Tarantino has written an original theatrical work celebrating the romance, spectacle and heightened storytelling of traditional swashbucklers. The production will also bring together actors, fencers, acrobats and musicians, suggesting a physically ambitious staging alongside Tarantino's characteristic dialogue and humour.

Producers Tom Rothman and Sonia Friedman said: "To see Quentin in action in a rehearsal room is extraordinary."

Joining Tarantino is an experienced theatrical creative team, including Tom Pye as scenic and costume designer, Natasha Chivers on lighting and Ian Dickinson on sound.

Philip d'Orleans will serve as fight director, with Sam Lyon-Behan as action co-ordinator. Music is by Tim Phillips, casting by Jim Carnahan, and Jack Bradfield is associate director.

Pye's involvement follows his Olivier Award-winning work on Paddington The Musical, while the production's combination of action, comedy and elaborate period staging will offer a very different theatrical challenge.

Full casting beyond Baron Cohen will be announced at a later date.

Tarantino established himself as a filmmaker with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, followed by Pulp Fiction, which earned him his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

He won a second screenplay Oscar for Django Unchained, while his other films include Jackie Brown, Inglourious Basterds and The Hateful Eight.

Baron Cohen, meanwhile, is no stranger to musical theatre on screen, having appeared as Monsieur Thénardier in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables and as Signor Pirelli in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd.

His theatrical debut with Tarantino brings two established screen talents together for a new production that will be among the more unusual additions to the West End's 2027 programme.

The Popinjay Cavalier begins previews at the Phoenix Theatre, London, on 23 February 2027, officially opens on 18 March, and is booking until 13 June 2027.
