For musical theatre fans, the concerts promise a particularly appealing mix of Williams' celebrated recording career and her extensive work on Broadway and in the West End. The announced programme will feature music from Into the Woods, Kiss of the Spider Woman and After Midnight, alongside hits including “Save the Best for Last”, “The Right Stuff”, “The Sweetest Days”, “Running Back to You” and Disney's “Colors of the Wind”. More recent material will include “Legs (Keep Dancing)” from Survivor.
Announcing the tour, Williams said: "I am so thrilled to be heading out on my first full concert tour here in the UK. There's nothing like the energy of a live audience, and I can't wait to share the music, the memories and a few surprises with everyone in February" Alongside the musical performances, Williams will share stories from her career in music, film, television and theatre.
Williams has established a substantial musical theatre career alongside her success as a recording artist. Her Broadway credits include Kiss of the Spider Woman, Into the Woods, Sondheim on Sondheim and After Midnight. She also appeared in the Broadway productions of The Trip to Bountiful alongside Cicely Tyson and the comedy POTUS.
Her performance as the Witch in the 2002 Broadway revival of Into the Woods earned her a Tony Award nomination. London audiences have seen her in City of Angels and, more recently, as the formidable Miranda Priestly in the West End production of The Devil Wears Prada, featuring music by Elton John. Her return to the UK concert stage offers an opportunity to hear material from these theatrical productions alongside songs from her solo albums.
Williams launched her recording career with The Right Stuff in 1988 and went on to release albums including The Comfort Zone, The Sweetest Days, Next, Everlasting Love and The Real Thing. Her biggest international hit, “Save the Best for Last”, became a defining song of the early 1990s, while other favourites include “Dreamin'”, “Work to Do” and “Love Is”.
She also recorded the Oscar-winning “Colors of the Wind” for Disney's Pocahontas, a song which became another major success in her recording career. Across music and acting, Williams has received eleven Grammy nominations, four Emmy nominations and a Tony nomination, alongside numerous other awards and honours. Television audiences will also recognise her as Wilhelmina Slater in Ugly Betty and Renee Perry in Desperate Housewives, while her film credits include Soul Food, Eraser, Shaft and Dance with Me. Her latest album, Survivor, provides another chapter in a recording career that began nearly 40 years ago.
