Wicked Celebrates 15th Birthday in London’s West End admin

Alhambra Theatre Tuesday 27 January by Fiona Holleyhead
From the first beat, it was clear the audience for Friends! The Musical Parody was packed with fans ready to laugh, recognise, and relive moments from one of television’s most enduring sitcoms. When you’re in good company with like minded fans of a series you grew up with, you know you’re in for an uplifting experience.
Rather than leaning on surface-level impressions, the show takes a smarter approach, weaving together iconic moments from all ten seasons of Friends into a fast-paced musical framework. Musical ensemble numbers cleverly reference familiar storylines and running jokes, prompting regular “I remember that episode” reactions without ever stalling the momentum. The writing understands the rhythm of nostalgia, using recognition as a springboard rather than a crutch.
Crucially, the humour lands consistently. This is affectionate parody with a sharp edge, not a string of cheap gags or lookalike impersonations. Each cast member brings their own spin to these much-loved characters, capturing their essence while allowing space for individuality and comic invention. It is this balance that keeps the show buoyant and engaging, even for those who might not have encyclopaedic knowledge of the original series.

The chemistry across the cast is one of the production’s real strengths. Their ease with one another mirrors the ensemble magic that made the television show such a cultural phenomenon in the first place, and it gives the musical numbers a sense of spontaneity and warmth. That connection extends beyond the performers themselves, drawing the audience into the joke and creating a shared sense of occasion.
The staging is inventive and well judged for a touring production, keeping the pace tight and the visuals engaging without unnecessary clutter. One particularly enjoyable touch is the way the backstage crew are integrated into the action, becoming part of the show in a playful, self-aware way that adds another layer of comedy while reinforcing the theatricality of the experience.
Production values are impressively high for a touring parody. Everything feels slick, polished and confident, from the musical arrangements to the choreography and technical execution. It is clear this is a show that knows exactly what it wants to be and delivers it with assurance.
Perhaps most importantly, the production succeeds as a genuinely feel-good night out. While die-hard fans will delight in spotting references and callbacks, newcomers are not left behind. You do not need to have memorised every episode to enjoy the warmth, humour and generosity of spirit on display.
Friends! The Musical Parody tours the UK until 2nd May 2026. It is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a wholesome, joyful evening of theatre that celebrates friendship, shared memories and the simple pleasure of laughing together.
