There are shows you watch and shows you experience. Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical is most definitely the latter. From the moment you arrive at Evolution London in Battersea Park, it feels as though someone has picked you up, transported you back to the 1950s and dropped you straight into the middle of the movie and I absolutely loved it.

The scale of the experience is remarkable. Rather than simply recreating Grease on a stage, the production builds the world of Rydell High around you. The auditorium becomes part school, part movie set and part playground, with something happening seemingly everywhere you look. The attention to detail is extraordinary. The costumes look like they have stepped straight out of the film, the locations are instantly recognisable and even the casting feels uncannily close to the characters we know and love.

Stephanie Costi’s Sandy and Giórgios Michaelídes’ Danny lead a brilliant company, with Lucy Penrose as Rizzo and Arcangelo Ciulla as Kenickie. But one of the joys of the immersive format is that there isn’t always a neat divide between cast and audience. Characters wander through the space and interact with you, making you feel like another student at Rydell rather than somebody sitting watching from the outside.

At one point I found myself sitting in one of the cars as the actors performed around us. It was ridiculously good fun and there are the big set-piece moments. The arrival of the car from above for “Greased Lightnin’” is pure spectacle. The cheerleaders and school sequences make the entire venue feel like Rydell High has suddenly sprung to life around you, while the staging frequently mixes live performance with imagery and moments familiar from the movie.

The live band deserves a huge shout-out too. They are absolutely superb, giving those songs an energy that sends a charge through the whole building. But perhaps my favourite moment comes towards the end. Just when you think you’ve got the measure of what this production can do, everyone heads outside for the end-of-term carnival. Suddenly the final part of the show explodes out into the open air, culminating in the last two songs with the audience right in the middle of the celebration. It’s joyous.

There were moments when I genuinely felt less like I was watching an adaptation and more like I had somehow found myself on the set while Grease was being made. For a film that has been part of popular culture for almost 50 years, that’s quite an achievement. It also understands that an immersive experience needs atmosphere beyond the performances. You can explore, eat, drink and simply enjoy being in this world before and around the main action. And special mention must go to the margaritas, which may genuinely be some of the best I’ve ever had.

Electrifying, inventive and enormous fun, Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical delivers on virtually every level. Whether you’re a lifelong Grease obsessive or simply want a completely different night at the theatre, this is an experience worth throwing yourself into.

You’re not just watching Rydell High, for a couple of hours, you go there.

Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical runs at Evolution London in Battersea Park until 13 September 2026. Visit the official site HERE
