Wicked Celebrates 15th Birthday in London’s West End admin
11-05-26
Thirty years after Trainspotting exploded onto cinema screens and reshaped British pop culture, Trainspotting The Musical is heading out on a major UK tour.
Following its world premiere in London’s West End, the new stage adaptation by Irvine Welsh will open at Edinburgh Playhouse on 19 October before touring across the UK through to March 2027.
Adapted from Welsh’s landmark novel and developed and directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, the production promises to bring Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud and Tommy roaring back to life for a new generation — while also reflecting on how addiction and disconnection have evolved since the story first emerged in the 1990s.
“This isn’t nostalgia,” the production says. “The past isn’t revisited – it lingers.”
The musical features new songs by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh alongside several iconic tracks associated with the original film, creating what is described as a “radical, invigorating and life-affirming” theatrical experience.

Leading the cast is Scottish actor Robbie Scott as Renton, with Sheridan Townsley as Sick Boy, Kieran Andrew as Spud, Frankie O’Connor as Begbie and Finlay Paul as Tommy.

Speaking about the production, Irvine Welsh said: “I believe the musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film. People need to think about the world we’re living in, and we offer that inspection, but they also need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off.”
The original 1996 film adaptation became a defining cultural moment, grossing more than $76 million worldwide and earning a BAFTA for Best Screenplay. It remains one of the most influential British films of the modern era, with its impact still visible across music, fashion, theatre and youth culture.
Now, nearly three decades later, Trainspotting The Musical looks set to bring that energy back to theatres across the country.
