Wicked Celebrates 15th Birthday in London’s West End admin

A brand-new musical written and composed by Chester resident Matthew Harry Dodd is set to make its exclusive debut at Storyhouse this summer, bringing a heartwarming message of diversity, acceptance and belonging to the stage.
Woof!: A Dog’s Tale follows the journey of a young puppy who struggles to fit in because he was born without a tail. Determined to find a place where he is accepted for who he is, the puppy embarks on an adventure in search of a community that will embrace him. Featuring a varied soundtrack spanning pop, rock, ballads and folk music, the production promises to offer something for audiences of all ages.
The musical’s themes of identity and inclusion are reflected in its cast, with all performers coming from the local area and identifying as BAME, neurodiverse, disabled and/or LGBTQ+.

For creator Matthew Harry Dodd, bringing Woof! to the stage has been years in the making. After returning to his hometown of Chester following 15 years away and embarking on a career change, he became immersed in the city’s thriving performing arts scene – a development that proved pivotal in finally turning his long-held vision into reality.
“Woof! is inspired by those classic Disney tales that we know and love,” said Matthew. “I hope Woof! can also win a place in people’s hearts as a tale about self-discovery and embracing who you are.”
Matthew explained that his move into social care played a significant role in helping him realise the project.
“When I changed careers and began working in social care, it was a chance for me to put my creative energy into making a meaningful difference,” he said.
“Working for Live! Cheshire, a centre based in Newton which supports young adults with learning disabilities, I helped them set up their drama group and was the instigator for them putting on their first pantomime, which I co-wrote the music for.
“One lovely unexpected outcome was that it gave me the confidence to make Woof! happen and to bring more music and joy into the community.”
Matthew cites musical theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber as one of his biggest inspirations.
“I’m a huge fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and his work, particularly Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar,” he said. “I remember him once saying that a musical about dogs wouldn’t work. Well, challenge accepted!”
Woof!: A Dog’s Tale is the first production to be developed by Joy Town Productions, Matthew’s newly launched theatre company, which aims to create original shows that are both entertaining and emotionally engaging.
The preview performance will take place on 6 August at 7pm in the Garret Theatre at Storyhouse. Suitable for adults – particularly dog lovers – and children aged eight and above, the production is expected to offer a feel-good evening of music, humour and heart.
Following the preview, Matthew hopes to continue developing the show and is inviting potential investors and collaborators to get involved.
