We’re always excited to discover new musical theatre writing at Matinee Musicals, and a brand-new concept EP inspired by the life of Alan Turing has certainly caught our attention.

TURING, a new musical by Timothy L. Michuda and Ben Ward, is set to release a six-track concept EP over the coming months, with the first single, Amongst the Stars, now available now.

The musical tells the story of pioneering mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing, exploring not only his extraordinary contribution to science and the Second World War, but also the personal cost of living as a gay man in a society where homosexuality was criminalised.

Rather than following a traditional chronological structure, TURING unfolds across three defining periods of Turing’s life, moving between the ages of 16, 28 and 40 as it explores themes of love, identity, friendship and loss.

The EP boasts an impressive line-up of performers from both sides of the Atlantic. Broadway talent includes Vincent Jamal Hooper, recently seen as Simba in The Lion King and previously in Hamilton, alongside Mason Olshavsky, who is currently appearing in The Lost Boys.

Representing the West End is James Olivas, who recently appeared opposite Rachel Zegler in Jamie Lloyd’s acclaimed revival of Evita, while UK performers Jacob Fowler and Aiden Carson also feature on the recording.

For Matinee listeners, Amongst the Stars is one to look out for. Performed by Aiden Carson and Jacob Fowler, it’s a beautifully crafted new musical theatre ballad that we’re already enjoying playing on Matinee.

The project has already received significant recognition. Following a staged production at Chicago’s Greenhouse Theater Center, TURING won both Best Musical and Best Lyrics at the 2024 Theatre on the Verge New Musicals Festival.

Writer Timothy L. Michuda said the EP represented the kind of musical theatre he wished had existed when he was younger, adding that recording the score with Broadway performers had helped reveal “the show’s potential.”

With a compelling true story, an accomplished creative team and an exciting cast of Broadway and West End performers, TURING is certainly a project we’ll be following closely.

The TURING concept EP will be released across all major streaming platforms over the coming months an we’ll be playing every track on matinee Musicals!
